The former military bakery is situated in Via Francesco Rolla, in the neighborhood of Cornigliano, an area that will be deeply transformed in the next years,  thanks to the realization of the Parco del Polcevera, a park near the new bridge Ponte San Giorgio.

The complex of the former "Caserma Gavoglio" was built, starting from the nineteenth century, in place of a previous powder factory built by the Republic of Genoa in the middle of the seventeenth century.
This settlement proceeds, historically, the birth of the Lagaccio neighborhood, one of the most heavily urbanized and densely populated areas of the city of Genoa, and takes up a tradition of war industry, present on-site since the seventeenth century.

The building is located in the centre of Sampierdarena, a historic working-class neighborhood, west of the centre of Genoa, bound to the port activities.

The 17th-century building has an external relevance of about 1000 sqm, a large garden raised over the street level. It is a detached and bright building. From the second post-war period until 2008 it was used as a school, then it has been closed and is currently unused.

The aim is to revitalise Genoa’s old city centre, one of the largest and most beautiful in Europe, whose fabric is woven from a network of stratified social and cultural relations. The plan’s assets are based on precise values that the city wishes to consolidate: namely, supportive conversation, citizen and entrepreneurial participation in its implementation, the widespread distribution of strongly integrated projects and sustainability.

This vision will be realised in the ten areas of intervention listed below.
